I just came back from a trip to the Caribbean to celebrate the birthday of my great-uncle, Ernie.

What made the trip so important was that I found him after 35 years.

And, I got to wish him a happy 95th birthday in person!

Barcelona has many small streets and alleys and sometimes missed opportunities for you if you don't keep your ears opened.

We were winding our way through the Jewish quarter which has a myriad of small tight streets.

We heard unique noises, reminding me of the low growl that elephants use to communicate with one another, but you can't hear.

Intrigued, we made a right turn, and saw almost a child like models 'catwalk' and many, many people.

A small boutique shops was showing off its summer line.

She was fun, tender and a great worker. She always greeted me with a hug y tenia una sonrisa que me encanta or a smile that enchanted me.

Now what fast-food restaurant do you go to where the worker embraces you?

She knew what I liked to eat and drink and always had my meal ready to perfection by the time I had to pay.

I loved the bocadillo con queso y bacon ... which is a bacon and cheese sandwich.

She left the restaurant for good to pursue a new line of work a year before I arrived back to the states.

She was Emily and I wish her, her new marriage and baby well if she ever googles this blog.

On August 15, 2010, Barcelona's barrio of Gràcia will celebrate la Festa Major de Gràcia 2010.

I've missed the last several years of the festa and for nostalgia sake I post this video of the 2006 winner carre de Torder, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE STREET.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!

Now, what is la festa de Gràcia you might be asking yourself?

Well, it's little streets within Gràcia that are outrageously decorated and prizes for the best decorated are awarded.

Themes run from pre-historic times to aliens and star-trek like creatures to quiet corners like reading for the kiddies.

It's Halloween except right in the middle of summer.

Children end up having a great time and grown-ups a better time.

When I was 19, a fella named Joe took me to dinner on our first date and like all young girls, I was a nervous wreck.

I dreamed of numerous forks and spoons set on the table and would I know which one to use.

I dreamed of over eating, ordering the most expensive meal, and missing the food in my mouth.

How I wished I could be calm and serene like this couple.

They were soooo into one another.

They were at Plaça Gal-la Placidia, a cute park in the barrio de Gràcia.

They sat there for a long moment quietly talking and seriously looking into each others arm pits and their own., completely oblivious of me or anyone else at the park.

I don't know what kind of relationship they had but to me the moment was beautiful.

Caring, sharing and communicating is how I defined the picture.

We should all be so lucky!

I took this photo from inside a steamy restaurant in a favorite plaça of mine.

It was dark with only florescent lighting illuminating the area

Contemplating whether to chose a diet coke with ice or a diet coke without ice (life is so challenging), I saw this lady walking and just about to sit down.

I got my camera ready, she sat, I took a few shots and here we are.

I photo shopped for contrast and that's it. I wanted to keep the ambiance of the moment. I chose not to crop to show her aloneness in a big space.

I hope you like the picture and that the photo evokes feelings and emotions for you as it did with me.

A Bloom in Yellow

The cactus and many other flowers were given to me by an expat from the states living in Barcelona.

She died and her family gave me her entire cactus collection.

I took what I could by hand and carrito and found my way back to the piso.

The one you see here is, of course, hers.

I photographed this beautiful flower when I saw its first bloom in my care.

Let me tell you what I think of this county fair!

It's fun for genders of all kinds including humans.

It's Well organized and there appears to be more rides.

However, I did miss the roller coaster and the dragon ride for kids 5 and under.

The coke, cotton candy, ice cream and hot dogs were great but my tummy didn't agree.

Now here's some advice.

Put on lots and lots of sun block, wear a hat and don't forget to drink lots and lots of water.

And if you've got youngins, BRING THE STROLLER!!

Plaça Catalunya is in the center of downtown Barcelona.

The park is surrounded by restaurants galore, shopping stores up the kazoo, street artists extraordinaire and birds ... lots of birds!

I love this area and I love the statue that you see.

So ... to my delight these 2 pretty ladies were sitting where they were.

It was hard to know who was admiring whom!

Folks! If you're looking for tapa meals and you happen to be in the barrio of gràcia walking on carrer Gran de Gràcia passing building #44 then YOU have to stop at the Tapa i àpat restaurant.

Let me tell you why!

Locals frequently dine there.

They know how to fry foods which can be a bit tricky.

The service is above par.

Menus are in different languages for the Catalan challenged.

You are special, even if you are a pesky tourist.

So ... all you have to do is order, smell the delicious aromas, eat and pay for the food.

I remember this cafe fondly.

But I warn you. I haven't been there in over a year and this is what I knew, for we were frequent customers. After all, I did shoot this photo to remember the place.

The little girl with the banana sees herself riding the dangerous dragon, with happiness and fearlessness.

Little did she know that 10 months later her time would come.

And, her mom would survive.

An aside note: In case you're wondering, the picture was manipulated with photoshop.

I thought I needed to say something in case any of you thought this picture was real.

I first saw him walking on the street a few blocks from where this photo was taken.

I saw only his back but he had a strut that would've put John Travolta to shame and I was interested.

So ... to my surprise and a smile on my face I found him, "singing" into a tin cup and oh, how I wished he would walk that walk.

You would have liked him. He had an exuberant and electrifying personality that would make any street performer proud.

I love the street artists and got to know some of them pretty well in Barcelona.

A street-performers life is very hard and a little kindness (like a coin or two) in their direction wouldn't be a bad idea for either you or them.

The Western Digital 160 Gig Passed away, peacefully, with its owner in attendance at the age of 3 years . The Western Digital will be dearly missed by its owner. It was known for its large drive capacity and affordability that drew others to its like-kind.

Most importantly, it will always be remembered by one close to it of its reliability (when it worked) and guarantee of reliability that seemed to know no limit.

Purchased in June 2006, the Western Digital was tooted as an alternative device to safely backing up your important documents and photos.

And that was exactly what the owner did. She trusted it with important text and precious, irreplaceable photographs.

I did a head-turn when I saw this young girl for, at that particular moment, her appearance stood out like no other.

The photo is not exceptional in "street photography" terms but she caught my attention because she first reminded me of Bridget Bardot (remember her) and she had those voluminous lips.

I remember thinking, if she was born with them, G-d bless her. If she had them treated, give me the name of her doctor.

But! I will never (I shouldn't ever say never, right?) get my labios treated.

More often than not, I've seen such horrific results from collagen therapy.

Geez! Just, look at some of the movie stars with their lips flapping in the wind.

And they can afford the best!

Anyway, her posture, look and dress stood out and I liked it.

Sometimes the Face Doesn't Matter

There have been so many MANY pictures taken of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia that I figure I would have to scale it all by myself to get a photo with a different perspective that would captivate the world.

With my love of heights, I don't think that's going to happen any too soon.

So ... what to do. It was a beautiful day and pesky tourists were everywhere.

She stood out from the crowd in her bright clothing on this chilly day, absorbed in her magazine, completely oblivious to her surroundings.

When I took this photo, I thought her style didn't make sense.

But!

It did and most of all, it was fun.

She showed her individuality and creativity and those qualities I liked.

When suddenly, through my viewer, I saw the couple immediately stop, embrace and kiss in that passionate way,

All the while holding each other YOU wish would last a lifetime.

Wow! When they finished, she looked at her and all of Barcelona breathed a sigh.

By the best of the very best photographers, I've been taught that when you don't have a tripod use a level surface, a pole, a tree, cup your arms to your chest, ANYTHING to hold that camera steady.

Squat and shoot!

And, according to my own experience,

Wear comfortable clothing!

This woman was brave for two immediate reasons:

Her dress and her shoes.

She took several pictures that were not to her liking, kept falling and making the funniest faces of displeasure.

I took my pictures of her that I liked and left her there squatting.

The obvious: she lacked stability in the absence of a tripod and a good teacher.

It was a nice warm day and we decided to go to plaça de Rius y Taulet.

As we approached the corner, we heard good jazz sounds.

There were lots and lots of chairs set and occupied. The crowd was standing room only except for this one young lady.

She sat there, she sat there you see with the sun shining brightly and its rays framing only her ... or so it seemed.

And that is the reason I took the photo.

But I suspect you have asked yourself the proverbial question:

Can sitting on cement for long periods of time cause derrier bunionitis?

Ah, you see, I know how concerned you are for the poor little thing!

And,

I don't know the answer.

Silly writing and I almost amused myself.

At the bottom of Las Ramblas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea is the statue of Christopher Columbus otherwise known as Monumento a Colón.

You can ride an elevator to the top, something I have never done, and probably take impressive photos.

Atop of the point, Columbus sits appearing majestic, assured and POINTING EAST.

History tells us that he wanted to find a new route to India and China and we all know where he finally landed.

I guess he will never learn.

He is Rodrigo, a jewelry designer of amazing talent. We met him and his friend, Raquel, on carrer de las Carolinas and we liked him WAY before we actually saw his face.

I would show you the picture but we will keep Rodrigo incognito only to protect the less dangerous.

Sixteen Years Without Moving a Muscle

He was grayed hair, smartly dressed and had an appealing face.

I saw him looking out the window shielding the sun from his eyes with his one hand.

But he looked worried and sad.

Who was he waiting for or was he watching someone who had just left?

Had he received some terrible news?

I watched for what seemed like a long time and the old man had not moved as if he were in shock.

I didn’t know what to do. So I took a photo hoping to catch his attention.

He didn’t react.

I moved in closer, took another photo and he didn’t even flinch.

I was surprised, concerned and worried.

Sixteen Years Without Moving A Muscle

I was now so close to the window he would have to be blind not to see me.

His eyes appeared glazed. He was transfixed in this position as if he were made of wax.

So, I took another picture, hoping that the sound of the camera and the sight of ME,taking photos like a MAD Woman, would alert him to my presence,

And then,

Oh, my,

You wouldn’t believe,

I was stunned,

He was a figure from the Wax Museum!

Santiago de Chile

For those of you who don’t know me, I’ll let you in on a little secret.

I’m enchanted, fascinated, awe-struck and nosy when it comes to people in the public eye. Is it just me or are you like that too?

While living in the United States I was probably the very FIRST subscriber of “People Magazine” when the first issue came out. (I might be dating myself here.)

Remember when the Enquirer Magazine was a newspaper that you didn’t tell anyone you read much less bought?

But, I, I stood proudly in the supermarket line with my Enquirer face-up, looking defensively at those around me, as the paper glided on the conveyor belt toward the cashier. (For those who are not familiar with the Enquirer or People Magazine, they are “gossip or rag” magazines of and about anyone famous, like Star Magazine in Europe.)

So you can imagine how I felt when I saw this fellow. He appeared invincible, manly, and sexy. Maybe you can’t imagine so I will tell you that I stopped dead in my tracks. Literally!

He was dark and handsome, just like the famous Sean Connery of the movies. I hope I don’t have to tell you movies are “real life”. No?

Folks, I’d like you to meet Santiago of Chile and what a wonderful, kind character he was and just a little bit leery of my companion and me. (Hmm .. I can’t figure out why).

One interesting tidbit he told us. He was living in Barcelona with a British woman. He could not speak English and she could not speak Castellano.

Interesting, I thought … maybe that’s the secret to lasting relationships.

You learn a lot walking the streets.

A Shadow of the Man He is: Redux

The past day or so has been a lot of fun learning how to transform a picture from color to an acceptable (at least to my taste) b&w photo.

I've been using the adobe photoshop channel mixer and love it to death.

If you want to feel like your back in kindergarten, just play with any imaging software.

An ipernity member, named Pappion, again suggested making the photo b&w and deepening the shadow on the wall.

So ... I did just that and voila!

Innocent Sultriness Redux

I belong to two (2) photo storage sites, one flickr and the other ipernity and for the past 6 months, I've been spending a lot of time on ipernity.

A recent ipernity contact, named pappion, whose photos I like very much, for their color, composition and interest suggested that I redo this photo.

Pappion said:

Personally I very much like the composition and lighting. If the photo were mine though here's what I would change ..... I would desaturate the reds a bit ( many of your pics have very saturated reds for my tastes) I would also go in and clone out whatever the little gold/silver spot is between her lips.

Innocent Sultriness Redux, 2009

I cloned out the bright spot on her left side, took out what looked like bubbles between her lips (only g-d knows), used curves and levels removing the reds and making her more bright.

Pappion was right about the red tones in my earlier photos as you can see here.

Shady Character

This is a goat, but, you probably already know that.

Goats are fun and they are cute to look at.

They are funny and in many ways act like us humans.

For example, while some humans smoke grass, the goats eat it.

Many humans eat junk food ... like cookies, candy, potato chips and generally overeat even good foods.

Goats are the same. They eat overeat green leaves, plastics, metals and rubber.

How do I know so much about GOATS?!

Ah, my fraternal grandmother had a farm with all sorts of animals and the goat was king or queen. That's what the goats thought and I knew that.

You see, I did know because out of all my cousins and friends I was each and every goats target.

When I came out of the house, the goats lined up in a single file (they must have been military goats) and waited for me to take a few steps and voila!

I was charged and let me tell you those horns are no laughing matter.

Can't you tell by this goat's demeanor that maybe just maybe I could be his next toy?

I think that was what he was mulling over.

But! I fooled him ... I wasn't going to let my past catch up with me.

Let him look for another ninny.

Sisters ... More than a Kid Picture

Okay, okay.

Today I speak solely in depth about the photo.

A few weeks ago, I shot a series of shots in a RAW format.

I was so curious about the RAW format and I wanted to see for myself what was so great about it.

Well ... as I went through my series of shots, a few were dark and disappointment set in.

But, out of curiosity, I went ahead with the photo and opened it in Adobe RAW image and boy was I super surprised.

There was this shot, the very one you see.

And I was about to discard it!

Oh, heck ... it had a lot of noise but the noise seemed to give the photo an old age feel.

The colors were as you see them.

I used the level feature, a bit of cloning, exposure and curve features but ever so slightly.

I was excited with the results and I've decided to shoot RAW images especially for portraits.

Forward to the past

It's not a working farm today but it in its time I believe the owners were very important people.

On their property, they also had a huge white steeple church and a school house.

But, what was impressive from the road was the large RED wheel and the sound of forceful, flowing water.

I normally try to take photographs with people in my photos, but this day, people were not important.

Notewell: my photo has one of those mysterious "dust spots" that comes and goes.

I could have photoshopped it, but I believe that the mysterious spot does not alter the beauty of the photo.

He strummed, hummed, sang and contorted his face and mouth as if his head was made of silly putty.

He was having a good time standing there on a sheet of ice that was slowly melting away.

The guitarist didn’t seem to care and neither did the audience distracted by his flamboyant theatrics, very similar to Jim Carrey.

I knew him before we met

I was in the car just about to leave when I saw this young man sitting on the bench looking so lonely, forlon and sad.

Little did he know that I knew what his future would bring.

You see, somewhere there is a little 10 year old girl learning the aerodynamics of the hula hoop she just got for her birthday.

She plays hop scotch, nock hockey, ping pong and dances to the latest music of Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

I knew him before we met, 2009

She and her friends are the original street corner dancers before street dancing was in vogue.

She shares secrets with her friends telling them how unsure she is of boys.

She's not confident. You see a swing hit her in the mouth and damaged her teeth.

Meanwhile, the fellow on the bench hasn't felt to well himself.

He is shy, awkward and angry.

Some twenty years will go by and by pure luck the little girl and him will meet.

For time has a way of making the wrong right.

They both are in a better place, with many more friends they ever dreamed of.

Their self-esteem, shyness, awkwardness and anger will have dissipated.

If he looks very hard, she will be the one waiting for him to sing to her.

I hope he watches and listens.

If you're in Las Vegas, and you've gambled all of your money and you can't take that trip to Venice you so hoped for then you might want to come to The Venetian Resort and Casino Hotel.

The hotel is impressive with a moat and gondolas surrounding the premises and the hotel is not even sinking.

But to tell you the truth, I would still rather be in the real Venice, tracing Aschenbach's footsteps.

A Post Worth Two Excuses

For a long while, I’ve tried to keep my personal life separate from the barçalunacy blog.

I post in a gung ho fashion, disappear suddenly and without warning, reappear.

So, today, after mulling, pondering and musing on, I have decided to write you my secret.

The first is a girl, Rania, not yet 2 the day I took this photo and a pro on the mobile phone. She speaks an “unknown” language fluently and has much to say.

I worried because we seemed to understand one another all to well.

The second secret is Nisha, just a day old when this picture was taken. I was not there for her birth but went a month later and stayed with my son and beautiful daughter-in-law for 2 months.

Caring, listening and being attentive, ALL DAY LONG is for the young and so this old lady (older than Brittany Spears but younger than Cher) was bushed, tired and sought the mattress, diligently on a daily and nightly basis.

No matter … these 2 angels are my 5 gigabyte grandchildren. Who else better to take photos of and by whom?

So, now you know.

A Fine Line

Today, I searched high and low for this picture, taken a few years ago.

I remembered the simplicity and the juxtaposition of what was real and what was not.

Today, this day, personally, I am trying to understand the difference, for the line between the two has disappeared.

Have you ever been the victim of a great love?

I have learned that there are different kinds of love … specifically love that nurtures, like the obvious, a mother to a child.

Then, there is passion disguised as love slowly tearing down what self-respect and pride you brought into a relationship, so that towards the end of your life, (if you are lucky and strong to have an end), you “abandon” the one you love to justifiably seek your own recovery and wish well the other’s healing.

We had the best of times and the worst of times. (Paraphrased from a Tale of Two Cities ... to make you proud!)

You have a tender part of my heart set aside and I will always love you.

Simply written; the girl in the photo became a statistic.

The scene brought back memories of my high school graduation, way back when.

No one who attended the ceremonies and sat in the sub-Saharan temperature of the non air-conditioned auditorium, in New York, was spared that day.

Aunt Anna subsequently found herself sitting alone.

What happened to this couple?

She suffered a similar indignity as my relative.

A Circle of Reason

I haven’t posted construction photos much, if at all, and they are my favorite pictures to shoot.

Memo: I will have to show you more in the future.

Anyway, barreling down Gran de Gràcia, in my usual lithe way, I saw these wonderful circular holes being drilled through a grandiose slab of white marble.

Cutting through marble, (a sacrilegious deed as throwing away Hershey Kisses Candy, gosh forbid) pains me immensely and I wondered why these workers were doing such a deed.

As I was taking pictures, un viejo antiquo, (an old man) turned to me and began talking.

He was very disgusted about the work he saw and explained to me in his animated way that these holes would never have been put there during Franco’s regime.

I got caught with my pants down. I didn’t expect simple picture taking to take on a political note.

I have enough trials and tribulations trying to make heads or tails on the American political system, the Bank Bailout, and Sarah Palin.

For me, I saw these holes as just holes placed in store fronts to protect them from stray cars veering into them.

Oh well … he had his idea and I had mine.

Autumn Delay

It was Wednesday and la festa de Mercè was celebrated through out all of Barcelona.

In 1687, Barcelona was riddled with locusts and where banished by the Virgin of Mercy.

The miracle has been celebrated ever since with songs, parades, musicians and activities for all ages, on September 24th.

But the miracle of all miracles was the sound of water.

A Dream Come True

On the day prior to my taking this photo, my camera and I were on disagreeable terms.

My Nikon refused to focus where I wanted. It put shadows where it sought. I kept tweaking over and over, as many of you who follow my blog know and I was about to put it on a time-out.

Even people and places of interest were not interesting, until we found ourselves at la plaça de Pi.

The sun was magic, uplifting my spirits and making a promise to me of better minutes at hand.

I listened and watched and discovered Juan.

He was sitting on a step, watching and smiling at me and having a good time with another attention-grabbing fellow.

He called me over and told me not to be scared. See, he knew I wanted his photo.

And, I clicked my accommodating camera that appreciated my nervous and exciting energy and it too knew that this was a special man.

We exchanged good-byes and I went about my business, but I couldn’t escape leaving the plaça de Pi.

A little while later, Juan called me and showed me a magic trick. He was feeling good and important that I had no idea how the card trick was a trick. But I knew.

His hands were fun and fascinating and I have a penchant for hands of the older genre.

Yes! He was a photographer’s dream come true.

I got my many pictures, one better than the next, and he made a friend.

We were descending the stairs of the metro, when we heard this strange but beguiling music.

As I got to the last stair, the young man moved his body to the music without skipping a beat on a most unusual and unfamiliar instrument I’ve ever seen.

Even if he did skip a beat, I wouldn’t have known better but the music did sound enticing.

I had my wide angle lens, and I so wanted to get a shot with fantastic distortion.

For those who have used this type of lens you have to almost get within inches of your subject, invading their space, becoming familiar with one another that you almost feel like you should put them on your Christmas list

And,

Sometimes causing them to wonder why the heck they let you even take a photo.

But, the wide-angle is lots of fun. In the next few week I will post more photos and show you what I mean.

By the way, if anyone knows what the name of the stringed instrument is, please let me know.

Do you remember the old high school senior pictures from way back when?

No. Marisa and Celsa didn’t graduate from anywhere when I took their photo; even though it certainly appears that they did.

They work at La Taberna del Cura, where just about every Sunday, we stand in line with the many others humans, to buy pit de pollastre or rotisserie chicken, and hear the famous words greeting us and every customer,

Hola! Diga!

We met Marisa for the first time; she captivated us with her warm persona, good natured spirit y una sonrisa que me encanta (a smile that enchants me).

We see Celsa’s cheery face each time we go there. She is a person with a wonderful personality, disposition and a great wink of the right eye.

And the hats! Overwhelming, remarkable and colorful, eh?

So, if you don’t want to cook, or you want to picnic some where with take out food, not to be confused with fast-food, and you don't mind waiting, then go to la Taberna.

Or eat in the restaurant, that is adjacent to the take-out area. You won’t be sorry. The lunch specials are delicious and very affordable.

It’s located on Carrer Gran de Gràcia. You will see many people lined up to buy not only pollo, farm or range raised, but rabbit, lamb and other good food.

La Taberna is an off shoot of the famous Botafumeiro restaurant, known for its quality seafood, ornate décor and attention to their customers.

It’s a classy, elegant and refined joint and La Taberna a few notches down, fitting my requirements, casualness.

When I first saw him, I thought him a most striking man.

I think the white beard and white hair added to his maturity.

We were just a block from plaça Rius y Taulet when we heard music resounding.

As we turned the corner, the entire plaça was filled with people of all genders and sizes.

There was not a place to sit. We were completely taken by surprise because our objective was to unwind, relax and sip a cup of coffee.

It was L’hora del Jazz or the Hour of Jazz featuring the DIVADAMS. Three main vocalists, Araceli Aiguaviva, Carol Brunet, Loni Geest and on guitar Peter Lemberg, on base Manel Vega and on drums Pau Bombardó were entertaining the crowds.

I didn’t know about this event, because quite frankly, between la festa de Gràcia and la Diada Nacional de Catalunya, 2 big events in Catalunya, I was pretty pooped.

Imagine being tired having FUN.

And I still have many photos of la festa to download and photos of individuals that are just plain fun.

Bulletin: Les Festes de la Mercè, or Festival of Our Lady of Mercy, Patron Saint of Barcelona, one of the biggest events in Barcelona will be celebrated by all on September 19th to the 24th, a 5 day affair.

Sorry, got to go; got a lot of resting to do.

Robert Kalman

A fun sidebar to my photo activities is the people I meet and have met.

It is not unusual to find others like me taking photos of YOU!

And so it happened one day I saw the legs of this very VERY tall man whose upper torso was hidden underneath an impressive Zorro like cape taking photies.

I pretty much can tell the pesky tourists from the locals taking pictures and this guy I didn’t know.

He peeked me TOTALLY!

My partner was curious but to chicken or cowardly to ask who he was.

Yes! It’s true, Robert, if you read this post.

So, in my classy, confident and assured way, I mustered up the courage to introduce ourselves to him and his smiling, warm companion.

He was Robert Kalman and she, Linda Kalman of NEW YORK, which happens, coincidentally, to be my birthplace a googolplex of years ago.

We exchanged pleasantries and that was nice.

But! Alas! The tables were turned.

He wanted our photograph! Can you imagine that?!

We obliged in that way many natives of Catalunya had with us.

He showed us his wonderful book of portrait’s taken in New York.

I don’t know if we will ever appear in Robert’s book, for you see, Robert’s hobby is photography taken with a view finder and where I unfortunately don’t remember at all the manufacturer’s name.

And,

A heavy, serious not for the foolish or unwise, wooden tripod.
